Marine mammal viewing initiative launches on Vancouver Island to help inform tourists

A partnership is being formed to help people better understand safe viewings of marine mammals around Vancouver Island.

4VI has partnered with the Marine Education and Research Society (MERS) and the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association (NIMMSA) to help tourists understand safe practices when going marine mammal watching.

Brian Cant, Vice President for Business Impact and Engagement with 4VI, said they are seeing too many close encounter videos on social media, confusing people on national laws meant to prevent disturbance to the animals.

“Our goal is to ensure that visitors are provided with accurate information about safe distances and expectations for guests without putting wildlife or humans at risk.”

A short video called ‘For the Whales’ has been created to inform visitors of the Vancouver Island Region of the best practices for marine mammal viewing.

People are encouraged to share the video through social media to spread the message ahead of the busy summer season where marine mammal watching increases.

For The Whales can be watched here.
