The City of Courtenay’s Comox Road sewer project will close Comox Road next week.
According to the city, the Highway 19A bypass will close at Comox Road between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. from July 8 to 10.
They say a full closure is needed because of the excavations size and depth required to complete connections at the intersection of the bypass and Comox Road.
A detour route using 5th Street onto Highway 19A in front of Lewis Park and Lewis Centre has been planned in preparation.
Work has been scheduled for this time to minimize traffic disruptions during the day and to avoid weekend activities in the area.
The sewer project is decommissioning an aging sewer pipe crossing the Courtenay River to protect marine habitat.
Once the new pipes are installed, the old pipe crossing the river will be decommissioned with construction expected to be completed in November.
According to the city’s website, the cost of the project is expected to be $2.7 million and will be a combination of long-term borrowing and reserves.
