Rental truck impounded for impaired driving and excessive speeding through construction zone

Police caught an impaired, reckless driver in a box truck speeding through a work zone on Highway 19 last week.

BC Highway Patrol officers from Campbell River were conducting speed enforcement on June 26 at around 9:30 a.m. when they clocked a driver going 106 km per hour in a 60 km per hour construction zone.

The construction zone is on Highway 19 near the Comox Valley Parkway, where crews were repaving northbound lanes.

Upon pulling the rental truck driver over, officers found the operator to be impaired by alcohol.

Acting officer in charge for BCHP Vancouver Island Adam Tallboy said thankfully they were able to stop the reckless driver.

“Our BC Highway Patrol officers saved lives by being in the right place at the right time. The construction workers on the roadway were put in danger because of the impaired driver,” he said.

The driver was served a $368 speeding ticket, is now prohibited from driving for 90 days, and had the vehicle impounded for 30 days.

BCHP urges people to plan for a safe ride home if they are planning to drink.
