The rumbling seems to be subsiding, after more than a dozen earthquakes in the last 48 hours off the Island’s west coast.
The last was a 5.0 magnitude quake recorded around 9:30 this morning [July 5]. The largest was a 5.7 magnitude quake recorded on Thursday morning at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
All the other quakes were magnitude 4 and larger, and happened in the same region around 230 kilometres southwest of Tofino. The region is well-known for quakes and is one of the most seismically active spots in the world.
No damage or tsunamis have been recorded, or are expected, from the earthquakes.
