Four of the 10 worst intersections on Vancouver Island are in Nanaimo, the latest crash stats from ICBC show.
The insurance corporation recently published the latest car collision statistics for BC. The good news is, although crashes at intersections on the Island are up, injuries and fatalities were the lowest they’ve been in five years.
The stats show crash hotspots in Nanaimo were all at intersections with Island Highway or Nanaimo Parkway. The worst was the intersection by the Nanaimo North Town Centre mall, which had 73 crashes last year, the worst north of Victoria.
Duncan also made the top ten, with 56 crashes at the Beverly Street intersection with the highway. The rest were in Victoria and Saanich.
In total, there were 40,343 crashes on the Island last year, up slightly from 2022 but still not as high as 2019’s high point of 41,558.
There were 5,180 injuries reported last year from crashes at intersections, down from 2019’s reported number of 7,253.
