Island rowers aiming for gold in upcoming Womens Eight finals

A Campbell River athlete is hoping for her second gold, when the Women’s Eight rowing team competes in the Olympic final early tomorrow morning.

Avalon Wasteneys won her first gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics along with the rest of her team. On Thursday, this year’s team secured their spot in the finals after coming in second, less than one second behind the American team.

The team is now prepping for their shot at the podium, and coxswain Kristen Kit says “In the Olympic final, all bets are off. Anyone can take the gold and it’s all about who’s the best on that day.”

One other team member is from Vancouver Island, Caileigh Filmer is from Brentwood Bay.
