Heavy rain this afternoon may create highway driving hazards

Heavy rain is expected today from Nanaimo north to Campbell River, prompting a warning from Environment Canada.

A low-pressure system will bring rain and possibly thunderstorms to the northern and central parts of eastern Vancouver Island today. It started this morning and will continue until later tonight. Up to 50 millimetres of rain are expected.

Heavy downpours could cause flash flooding and water pooling on roads and highways, drivers should take extra care today and watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

The rain is expected to end overnight.
