48 rental homes apart of new building for women and children in Courtenay

Women in the Comox Valley needing housing support are getting help.

The province announced today a new 48-unit apartment building will open with most residents expected to come from other short-term rentals, women leaving violence, or individuals recovering from trauma.

Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon said affordable housing options helps communities thrive and stay healthy.

“These new homes in Courtenay will be a catalyst for change for women and their children in need of affordable housing in the community.”

The building is located close to parks, schools, and shops and features a gathering space and parking for vehicles and bicycles.

The building includes 16 studio units, 21 one-bedroom units with five of them being accessible, eight two-bedroom units, and three three-bedroom units.

Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells said the project should leave a legacy on the community.

“This new housing is going to be an incredible addition to our community and will give the women and children who will be living here an affordable, stable, safe place to call home.”

Non-profit organization Comox Valley Transition Society will own and operate the building.

Rents for the units will be approximately 20% below average rents in the private market.
