Starting this month, the City of Courtenay will roll out reduced road speeds around schools.
The City says they have installed 40 kilometer/hour signs on roads in a 500-metre radius around all the schools in School District 71. The goal is to improve safety and comfort to those who walk, roll, or drive to school.
They say these signs are also part of a plan where staff will roll out 40 kilometer/hour speeds throughout Courtenay for the next 5 years, with hopes of keeping streets safe and livable in the future.
As a result, you are asked to adjust your speed while driving, with the speed limit to be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For roads with lower speeds, such as a school zone, the posted speed will be in effect during specific hours.
