Island Health warns of possible exposure to Hepatitis at Dairy Queen

If you dined at the Courtenay Dairy Queen recently, you might have been exposed to Hepatitis A.

Island Health warns that people who ate at that restaurant between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. on September 10, 12, 13 or 14 might have been exposed to the virus.

They say the virus affects the liver and can cause you to be sick, with symptoms include yellowing of the skin and eyes, light-coloured stools, losing appetite, nausea, fever, flu-like symptoms, diarrhea, and pain on the right side of the belly, under the rib cage.

While the risk of getting the virus in public is low, the health authority recommends you get a vaccine within 2 weeks of your most recent visit to Dairy Queen.

You can get the vaccine at the Comox Valley Health Unit on England Avenue anytime from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on this weekend only. The unit isn’t open from 12 to 1 p.m.

For those living outside the Valley, call your Public Health Unit.

Island Health adds if you were already infected with Hepatitis A or got two vaccines for the virus before the exposure, you don’t need to be immunized.

In the meantime, they ask you to check for symptoms. If you feel well, you can carry on with your day, but if not, don’t go to work and seek medical help.
