Comox Valley governments to close facilities on National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

With next Monday being National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, several facilities will be closed.

The Comox Valley Regional District says the closures are to make sure the local governments observe National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

They say commemoration of that history and how the schools continue to impact people today is an important part of reconciliation, with the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland, and the District to close 16 facilities that day.

This includes Courtenay City Hall, Courtenay Fire Hall, Lewis Centre, Comox Community Centre, CVRD office, Comox Valley Sports Centre, LINC Youth Centre, and Village of Cumberland office.

The district adds that while the buildings are closed, employees are encouraged to take part in events and activities that acknowledge both the survivors and those who never returned home.

For what you can do next Monday, you can wear orange, attend the Comox Valley Spirit Walk from 11 am to 5 pm, and get learning resources at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
