Sea Wolves Man up to Cancer event brought in a record amount this year as they kicked off their third annual fundraising event to help men battle cancer across Vancouver Island.
The event was held at Wolf Brewing, in Nanaimo, on Sept. 21, and was hosted to live music, BBQ and a live panel of discussion about men’s cancer and how it’s not something to be ashamed of.
Over 250 people attended the event, including many men fighting cancer, and according to president Greg Brown with a total amount of $21,200 it shows people will always help those who are fighting cancer across Vancouver Island.
“Our goal is simple: men with cancer helping other men with cancer,” he says. “We understand the journey, and we are here to provide support, camaraderie, and practical help.”
According to Brown, the money goes to help build one of the pack’s key initiative items called the Chemo Backpack program, which is filled with ‘essential items’ including toques, water bottles, electrolytes, ginger chews, lip balm, hand lotion, wipes and reading material and costs roughly $150 to assemble.
The Seawolves was founded with the sole mission of providing support for men battling cancer and raising awareness about men’s health along with the unique challenges they face, but Brown says in a media release that they also advocate for easier access to medical screenings and eliminating the need for a doctor’s referral for PSA testing.
An additional fundraiser was held at the Landlubber Pub, which raised an additional $775 to help the Seawolves.
