Western Forest Products announces curtailment at BC sawmills

One of Vancouver Island’s largest employers announced yesterday that it would reduce lumber production at its BC sawmills from October to December.

Western Forest Products says the curtailment will cut approximately 30 million board feet from production.

WFP says in a media release that the curtailments are due to “a combination of market challenges including weaker lumber demand and higher U.S. softwood lumber duty rates.”

President and CEO Steven Hofer says that all levels of government should be creating policies that support the forestry industry ahead of a possible doubling of U.S. Softwood lumber duty rates in 2025.
