The BC NDP remains focused on retaining the Courtenay-Comox riding in the October 19 provincial election.
Leader David Eby and MLA for the region Ronna-Rae Leonard paid a visit to a Comox home Friday to discuss plans to attach suites to family homes.
Eby reiterated his desire to create more creative housing options to allow families to stay in their preferred communities.
“That’s why we have taken the steps we have, to make sure that people are able to build housing like this, to create opportunities for families to live together to recognize there are families that really benefit from living like this and also to create the housing that we need.”
Eby projected 300,000 new middle-class housing units would become available within the next decade if elected.
In addition to new housing, Eby wants to continue the crackdown of homes being purchased with the intent of turning them into mini hotels to rent out for profit.
It marks the second time in recent weeks that Eby has appeared in the Comox Valley for an announcement, previously stopping in Cumberland to discuss housing construction.
The Courtenay-Comox projects to be a close race between BC Conservative candidate Brennan Day and incumbent MLA for the region, Ronna-Rae Leonard of the NDP.
Leonard previously edged out Day in the 2020 election, who ran under the BC Liberals (now known as BC United).
Other candidates for the region include BC Green Party’s Arzeena Hamir, and independent candidates John Hedican and Devin Howell.
