With a big storm in the forecast this weekend, the provincial River Forecast Centre is issuing a warning that flooding may happen all over Vancouver Island.
The first significant stormfall event of the season for southeastern BC is on the way, predicted to bring up to 150 millimeters of rain on some parts of Vancouver Island. Higher elevations may get up to 300 millimeters.
As a result rivers are anticipated to rise rapidly as the rainwater enters, continuing through Saturday and into Sunday. Current modelling suggests Vancouver Island could see river flows reaching 5 or even 20-year highs.
In the meantime, Mainroad Contracting will be out on the highways, making sure drainage is clear. Drivers should take extra care during the weather system and watch out for work crews.
