Village council could approve a memorandum of understanding with a housing society to build an affordable housing project.
In a report, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Cumberland Michelle Mason is asking for council to approve a memorandum of understanding between them and M’akola Housing Society.
The goal of the memorandum is to make the society the proponent for affordable housing to be built at 3345 Second Street. The Village has a lease with Vancouver Island Health Authority for the project, with construction to begin on June 28, 2025.
While they have zoning in place and a development permit issued, Mason says the Village is the only organization to have a lease for this project.
“There are no other partnership agreements in place with any other organization other than CVTS being named on the housing agreement with VIHA,” said Mason.
Mason says staff have reached out M’akola for them to be a funding applicant for the project, with the housing society interested in the project.
She hopes by approving the memorandum, it’ll allow the Village to give the society all of the information for the project, helping them work towards submitting a funding application to BC Housing.
The report will be presented for Monday’s council meeting on October 28, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
