BC Hydro is warning people about higher river flows in two areas of the Puntledge River.
A safety advisory has been issued for Barber’s Hole and Nymph Falls starting October 31 when the Comox Dam will discharge about 30 cubic metres per second (m3/s) from 13 m3/s.
Storms in the past two weeks have helped store more water following a dry spell this summer and October is projected to be 120% above normal cumulative precipitation.
The Comox Lake Reservoir water level currently sits at 133.7 metres above sea level, a two metre increase from October 18.
The reservoir is expected to continue to rise in the next week with moderate rain forecasted this weekend and early next week.
Water spills over the Comox Dam at 135.33 metres, but is kept at 134.4 metres during storm seasons for flood risk management operational flexibility.
BC Hydro asks people to stay away from the affected areas as the river flows increase, and safety signage will be in place highlighting the risk.
