RCMP offer safety tips as daylight hours dwindle

RCMP say with decreasing daylight, everyone needs to take more care when they’re approaching an intersection.

They add pedestrians always have the right of way when entering a crosswalk, however, it is their responsibility to make sure they’re visible and still be on alert to avoid injury or risk.

Nanaimo reserve constable Gary O’Brien says collisions at intersections are increasing and most of them don’t need to happen.

“The reality is that the overwhelming majority of these incidents are preventable if pedestrians and motorists look out for each other,” he says.

He adds pedestrians should wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight at night and look both ways before approaching vehicles or entering a crosswalk.

Motorists should also scan crosswalks, and when making a turn always look for pedestrians.
