Police investigating pickup truck incident at Denman Island terminal

Comox Valley RCMP are investigating an incident where a truck drove into the water at the Denman Island ferry terminal.

Police got the call at 6:45 a.m. on Friday, saying a pickup truck crashed through barriers and into the water at the Denman Island West terminal.

BC Ferries staff were able to get the driver and passenger out of the water safely, with both suffering minor injuries. One person was taken to the hospital.

Media relations officer Constable Monika Terragni says investigators are still reviewing evidence from that incident.

“However, impaired driving is being considered as one of the factors in this incident,” said Terragni.

According to BC Ferries, the situation led to a risk of several sailings being cancelled at that terminal on Friday, but after cleaning up, there were no delays.

To keep the facility safe for customers, BC Ferries says they will be doing overnight repairs at the terminal starting this Sunday.

During this work, they say you might notice more noise around the terminal, with staff working to minimize the impact for customers and neighbours.

The work will run 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. from November 17 to November 20.

RCMP say criminal charges will be recommended if it’s appropriate based on the evidence.
