Two new units have been opened by a local non-profit in Courtenay.
At around 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, WeCan Shelter Society held a Grand Opening for two homes at Maple Pool Campground, making it the first time they have opened two at the same time to house the homeless.
Vice-Chairman of the Society Tom Grant says it feels great to open these units.
“Hopefully we can get two people off the streets and into these new homes before Christmas,” said Grant.
Grant says getting the units ready was a wonderful experience, as through the members of the Comox Community Baptist Church, the work was finished in two and a half weeks, instead of the usual length of three to four months to finish one unit.
While the units are ready, finding people to move in is a process.
“We prefer to work with other agencies around town, like the Transition Society and the Social Services offices, and we look for them to help find us clients to get in here,” said Grant.
“We like to keep this very private, and the people’s identities anonymous.”
He says people can also apply to live in the units through the society’s website and Facebook page.
They hope to get two people to move in the units before Christmas.
