WEEK IN REVIEW
The Glacier Kings split their games from last weekend, losing 6-2 on home ice to the Peninsula Panthers Saturday night, before bouncing back Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 victory in Nanaimo.
Head Coach Curtis Toneff called the Panthers a “well-oiled machine”, and said it was one of his team’s best games of the season despite the result.
“Their goalie played well and they’re a team that obviously can capitalize when given an opportunity and maybe we gave them one or two too many.”
Toneff said he liked his team’s ability to bounce back the following day in Nanaimo against a team going through a cold stretch.
The Glacier Kings remain one point ahead of the Buccaneers for third in the North Division standings.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 13 7:00 P.M. VS PORT ALBERNI BOMBERS
The Glacier Kings kick this new weekend off with a road contest in Port Alberni Friday night against the Bombers.
The two teams last met just two weekends ago, with the Glacier Kings falling at home to them 2-1.
Toneff said staying out of the penalty box will be key for his team, due to Port Alberni’s strong powerplay unit.
“They call a couple more penalties down there in Port Alberni and they’re a team that has the puck more than they don’t and they move their feet, so we have to stay disciplined.”
It will be the fourth matchup of the season between the two sides, with each game being separated by just one goal.
The two will meet again next weekend before the Christmas break.
SATURDAY DECEMBER 14 7:45 P.M. VS KERRY PARK ISLANDERS
The Glacier Kings will return to home ice for the weekend Saturday for an interdivision game against the Kerry Park Islanders.
The Islanders have been one of the hottest teams in the league going back to the beginning of November and having won their last four games in a row.
Toneff said it will be important to keep Kerry Park’s top players in check, as they have four players in the top 10 in the league in points, with three of them making up the top three.
“Maybe it’s a little bit of a coaching adjustment where we look to match a little bit against, they’re high-end guys and shut them down.”
The two sides last met on November 9, with Kerry Park skating away with a 5-1 win at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
