Donors help VIU break fundraising record

Vancouver Island University has set a new benchmark as they wrap up their annual Giving Tuesday campaign to help students in need.

The campaign is designed to help remove barriers to education and VIU says this year they’ve raised $380,000 which is $30,000 more than they hit last year.

“This year’s focus was on the VIU Access Fund, which really resonated with people,” they say in a media release. “The VIU Access Fund is a special-purpose fund that provides students with financial support and access to specialized equipment, so they don’t have to choose between paying bills and attending school.”

Chief advancement officer Richard Horbachewski says students are struggling, especially now, and the money raised will help address some of these concerns.

“With inflation and rising costs of living, we know students are struggling more than ever to meet basic needs while they access the education that will help them follow their career aspirations,” he says. “We’re grateful to both our longtime and new donors for their support for our students.”

The funds will go towards initiatives like the gear closet, laptop loan program and a bi-weekly shuttle.

According to VIU, Giving Tuesday is a global movement that enables people to support causes meaningful to them during a season that is heavy on holiday sales and consumerism.
