After a fire devastated Telegraph Cove Resort, many are sharing their thoughts on social media.
On New Years Eve, a structural fire destroyed several parts of the beloved resort, including a portion of the boardwalk, Old Saltery Pub, Killer Whale Cafe, and the Whale Interpretive Centre.
The news of the fire saddened many residents, who took to social media talking about how great of a loss this was for the surrounding communities.
CEO of Bay Cetology Jared Towers says the incident was a blow, especially with the loss of the Centre.
“What a huge loss for the north island, marine education, the whale community, and those who knew this place,” said Towers.
“There is nothing replaceable here and that beginning to sink in took the last jam out of 2024 and first of 2025.”
The Centre is known for holding the largest public collection of marine mammal skeletons in BC, having opened all the way back in 2002.
He says many memories were made at the resort preparing whales for the Centre. This includes seeing the T044 whale at his final resting place in the resort, preparing to dearticulate the body, then presenting under the whale’s skeleton at a community gathering last year in the Centre.
Resort staff say the cause of the fire is under investigation.
