Kings Corner: January 3-5 weekend

WEEK IN REVIEW

The Glacier Kings have not played a game since December 20, 2024, after entering into the league wide holiday break.

They last played the Port Alberni Bombers, winning 2-0 on home ice.

They now trail the Bombers by 11 points in the standings for second place in the North Division, something Head Coach Curtis Toneff said is a goal of theirs to catch them in the new year.

“It’s not necessarily in our control anymore but if we can take care of our business, we’ll have a chance to do that.”

Kicking off the 2025 portion of the season, the Glacier Kings sit in third in the North Division holding a four-point lead over Lake Cowichan.

FRIDAY JANUARY 3 7:00 P.M. VS VICTORIA COUGARS

Starting off the new year is a road matchup in Victoria against the Cougars for the Glacier Kings Friday night.

It will be the two teams’ third matchup of the season, with the teams splitting the first two games so far.

Each home team has won the matchup, with the Glacier Kings winning 3-1 on October 26, and the Cougars winning 9-1 on November 8.

Toneff said he’s hoping his team will start to play a “playoff style” game coming out of the break as they look to pick up where the left off.

“Short shifts I think is an important thing coming back from a break like that, simple plays in the neutral zone, getting it to an area where we can have some success, and protect the puck.”

Victoria sits in fourth place in the South Division with 33 points, just a two-point advantage over the Glacier Kings in the overall standings.

SATURDAY JANUARY 4 7:00 P.M. VS NANAIMO BUCCANEERS

The Glacier Kings then will return to the Comox Valley Saturday night to play the Buccaneers in their first home game of 2025.

Nanaimo struggled heading into the holiday break, winning just two games since November 16.

The Buccaneers trail the Glacier Kings by five points in the North and sit one point back of fourth place Lake Cowichan.

Toneff said it’s important to continue to build a cushion ahead of those teams to solidify their spot in the playoffs.

“It’s a good challenge for us and it’s kind of nice that every point is going to matter because you get into the playoffs and now, you’re used to the stress and battle.”
