Skier rescued by Island SAR after Mount Cain fall

A 35-year-old skier got rescued after a serious fall on Mount Cain this weekend.

The incident happened on Saturday, where the skier fell in the West Bowl of the mountain, leaving them unconscious, resulting in Comox Valley Search and Rescue being called in to perform a Class D Fixed Line rescue.

On their social media, they say while the incident happened outside ski boundaries, Mount Cain’s patrol team started rescue efforts and prepared for air assistance.

“With time being critical, 49 North Helicopters transported members of our team to the scene,” said Comox Valley Search and Rescue.

“Mt. Cain patrol had expertly prepared landing zones for both the rescue helicopter and the air ambulance from Ascent Helicopters. The skier was located on a steep slope and had already been partially stabilized thanks to the efforts of Mount Cain patrol and a doctor on-site.”

They say their team were able to transport the skier to the mountain’s parking area, where BC Emergency Health Services took over.

They thank everyone involved with the rescue, and encourage all skiers to stay safe and adventure responsibly.
