A new chief and council have been elected for K’omoks First Nation.
On January 5, the Nation held elections to form the chief and council for the upcoming two-year term, which saw more than 63 percent of members voting this year.
Nicole Rempel got elected as Chief Councillor with 105 votes, while Candace Newman, Susan Savoie, and Richard Hardy were elected as councillors with 110 votes, 84 votes, and 81 votes respectively.
Rempel says she is humbled and honoured to serve the membership for a fourth term.
“I look forward to working with my fellow Council members to represent and advocate for all members of our nation, for our rights and for our future,” said Rempel.
“We stand on the threshold of history with an upcoming vote on our treaty. It is an exciting time as we look to our future and the possibilities that we have negotiated and fought hard for over the past 30 years. Regardless of the path our nation chooses, there is much work to be done.”
The nation says before this election, Rempel served as elected Chief from 2017 to 2023, bringing not only experience, but also a vision of equality and leadership for her new role.
They add the new councillors each served a previous term as councillors.
This change went into effect on January 7.
