An affordable housing project in Cumberland makes progress through a bylaw reading.
On Monday’s council meeting, Village council gave a bylaw for the 3345 Second Street housing project a second reading. The bylaw’s focus is to change the zoning on an affordable housing parcel, increasing the allowed density and height to allow for more storeys and units.
The Village says this comes as part of the housing project, which aims to build affordable units for those in need. The proposed mix would see 50 percent of units with rent geared to income, 20 percent with deep subsidy, and 30 percent near market rent.
Currently the project’s zoning is for a three-storey building with 22 units, with hopes if the bylaw is adopted, the zoning can be changed to allow for a fourth storey and 34 total units.
They add the bylaw is considered for a third reading and a final adoption by council, set to take place at the January 27 council meeting.
