A traffic pattern change because of construction is coming to Comox Road.
The Comox Valley Regional District says crews are planning to instal a sewer forcemain pipe as part of the Sewer Conveyance Project.
Because of the work, one-way traffic will be in effect for Comox Road as the road’s width can’t safely accommodate two lanes of traffic while the work takes place.
The district says the change will see traffic moving west from Comox to Courtenay from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the work zone to be closed to all traffic from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
While the zone is closed, you won’t be able to turn right onto the road if you’re crossing 17th street bridge. A detour route will be open for use up Ryan Road and onto Lerwick Road.
Chair of the Comox Valley Sewage Commission Director Doug Hillian says this is a major change and it’ll impact everyone.
“The project team will be monitoring traffic flows closely and adjusting traffic light timing along the detour route to help keep vehicles moving,” said Hillian.
“However, we will all need to add some extra time to our commutes and perhaps consider opportunities to carpool or use transit to reduce the volume of traffic during this period.”
They say as crews work, you can expect minor schedule changes for bus routes 1 and 2, while routes 3, 4, and 15 get some detours.
The work is expected to run from March to May this year. The traffic change will be officially implemented starting March 10.
