Police warns of scam that has cost people nearly $10K

Comox Valley RCMP is warning residents of a scam that has cost people nearly $10,000.

Police say between January 7 and January 23, they received many reports from people believing they had gotten e-transfers for items they were selling on Facebook Marketplace, only for the transfer to be revealed as fake.

They say the scam starts with sellers getting what looks like an e-transfer, and when they attempt to accept the money, it actually approves a withdrawal instead.

For some situations, the scammers access the victims account and change personal information.

Officers have tips you can follow to avoid being a victim of this scam.

They recommend logging into your bank account separately to confirm an e-transfer was received, avoid clicking links from emails or texts to accept money, consider meeting in-person for cash payments, and to regularly check any changes to your banking details or unauthorized transactions.
