MLA Day says government taxing storage units under Speculation and Vacancy Tax

Courtenay-Comox’s MLA is calling out the NDP government over what he calls an unnecessary tax.

Brennan Day said the provincial government is taxing storage units under the Speculation and Vacancy Tax.

Day said he was brought to light be the tax after a Comox Valley resident spent four hours on the phone trying to receive clarity if their strata-titled storage locker, only to be told the issues was with the legislation itself.

“This isn’t a tax on empty homes; it’s a tax on whatever the government decides to classify as ‘residential’, even when no one could possibly live there.”

The storage unit was classified as a Class 1 residential property due to a previous court ruling, despite having no windows, plumbing, or a kitchen.

The owner was informed that because it was above the $150,000 threshold, they would be subject to the tax despite not being able to live in the residence.

“This is just another example of the government prioritizing tax revenue over common sense.  Instead of addressing BC’s housing shortage, they’re making life even harder for British Columbians.”

Day is calling for the government to fix the legislation issue involving storage units and other non-residential properties which are unfairly taxed.
