Point in Time counts coming to several communities

Point in Time homeless counts will be conducted during March and April in several communities on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

They will be done in Sechelt and Gibsons on March 5, Powell River on March 7, Parksville and Qualicum on April 29, Campbell River on April 30, and Port Alberni on April 30.

In November, Point in Time counts were done in the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo.

The findings from those two communities are expected to be released in the spring.

United Way says says the PiT counts help determine the amount of homelessness in communities and identify gaps in services and are used in policy planning, to develop services and determine funding priorities.

Point in Time counts are conducted over a 24-hour period and volunteers, agencies, municipalities, and outreach workers go out into their communities to find and learn more from those who are unhoused.

United Way says each count is unique to the community. In Cowichan, surveyors were sent out to different locations to hand out wellness bags and conduct surveys. In Nanaimo, three locations were used to hand out wellness bags, speak with individuals, and connect them with services.
