Kings Corner: February 7-9 weekend

WEEK IN REVIEW

The Glacier Kings went another week with a 1-1 split, dropping their home matchup to the Campbell River Storm 6-1, before bouncing back Wednesday with a 4-0 shutout win over Westshore.

On Saturday’s game, the Glacier Kings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, before breakdowns led to six unanswered Campbell River goals.

Head Coach Curtis Toneff said Campbell River scored on all their quality chances, something his team wasn’t able to do but liked the way they finished the game.

“I didn’t mind the way we lost; we’ve had a lot of new faces come in and there were some fireworks and sometimes that brings a team closer together and I think it might have brought our team a little closer together.”

They were able to come back with another Wednesday night game in Westshore and beat the Wolves for the second week in a row 4-0.

Toneff said it was a sloppy first period to start, but a strong third period, good special teams, and great goaltending allowed them to win.

“I thought we got better as the game went on so maybe that’s going to bring us closer to a full 60-minute effort.”

FRIDAY & SATURDAY FEBRUARY 7 & 8 VS LAKE COWICHAN KRAKEN

It’s a home and home split this weekend for the Glacier Kings, starting Friday night on the road in Lake Cowichan starting at 7:30 p.m., before returning home Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

It’s a big two game series between the two sides and the las they’ll see each other in the regular season, with the two sides separated by just one point in the standings for third place in the North Division.

Toneff said it’s a great chance for his side to make up some points the Kraken have stolen from them throughout the year, but they can’t get too far ahead of themselves.

“I think it’s important that we just start with a really good road effort on Friday and just go from there, there’s no sense in getting too ahead of ourselves with the whole weekend, we just need to go and have a great first period, keep our juices flowing, and go from there.”

Coming into this weekends games, the Kraken have played one more game than the Glacier Kings, with a few weeks to go until the final games of the regular season on February 22.

Both teams are looking to hold onto playoff spots above the Nanaimo Buccaneers who sit three points out with five games left on the season.
