Man arrested for break-and-enter, property damage in Cumberland

Watchful neighbours helped the Comox Valley RCMP interrupt a break-in in Cumberland earlier this week.

On Tuesday, February 4, officers responded to a report of a suspicious man running through backyards and jumping fences in the 3200-block of 10th Street around 7:15 a.m.

Police were directed to a residence as they arrived and found a suspect inside.

Cst. Monika Terragni said community members quickly reporting the incident allowed officers to arrest the man quickly.

“Due to his concerning behavior, he was taken to the hospital for medical assessment before being transported to jail.  Once medically cleared, he was held in police custody to appear in court.”

49-year-old Matthew Maveety is charged with break and enter, resisting arrest, and mischief to property.

He has been released on protective conditions after an initial court appearance, with his next court date scheduled for February 27.

An officer sustained minor injuries during his arrest.
