CVRD obtains Vancouver Island Mountain Centre to build fire response bays

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) wants to better support emergency responses around Mount Washington.

They are collaborating with Mount Washington Pacific and the Vancouver Island Mountain Sport Society to purchase the Vancouver Island Mountain Centre, with plans to build fire response truck bays.

CVRD Electoral Area C Director Edwin Grieve said the patience and commitment from the community and partners allowed them to make this firehall a reality.

“The purchase of the Vancouver Island Mountain Centre and plans for truck bays signifies a great step forward in providing the necessary emergency response to the residents and visitors of Mount Washington.”

The CVRD took possession of the mountain centre at the beginning of February, with the purchase funded through the approved Community Works funds and the Growing Communities grants.

The centre will be used as an administrative and indoor training building, with the truck bays storing vehicles, supplies, and equipment.

General Manager of Mount Washington Alpine Resort Dean Prentice said it’s exciting to see the project come to fruition and the persistence to find solutions should be celebrated.

“This is great news for the entire mountain community, and we look forward to working with and supporting Fire Chief Bruce Green and his team in the years ahead.”

Construction of the truck bays is expected to start this summer and is expected to be completed in late 2026.
