LUSH Valley says now is the time to buy local amidst ongoing tariff threats

A Comox Valley food organization says now is the time to invest in the local food economy.

With the U.S. tariffs threat still looming and climate instability, LUSH Valley says it’s time to support local growers and producers.

Through their Good Food Box program, they were able to purchase $188,650 in 2024 of Comox Valley-grown foods.

This year however, they lost funding from a major contract and say they won’t be able to purchase as many products for the program without more support.

LUSH Valley Executive Director Maurita Prato said they are looking to increase their Good Food Boxes by at least 100 units each week to support the farmers they buy from.

“Through the climate crisis and more extreme weather events, and now through increased political instability to the south, it is more critical than ever that we invest in resilient communities with good food at the center.”

Other ways that can help support local food producers include going to the Comox Valley Farmers Market or purchasing food from local farm stands.
