Local group to share public responses to AAP process in CVRD meeting

A local group looks to share public responses to the AAP process with the CVRD board.

Called Comox Valley Action, they are a group of taxpayers that oppose the district’s Unified Alternative Approval Process, a process that covers four different projects.

Group representative Andrew Rice saying they aren’t against the projects, but more so the process.

“We find the process somewhat undemocratic in the sense there had to be a certain number of people to show opposition to this, in this case 10 percent of the population,” said Rice.

“With the lack of information provided to the public, we found during this time of the year and engagement that people had, that people weren’t properly informed.”

He says they created a website for residents to sign opposition forms, with the aim to make information as transparent as possible so people could make their own choices. A total of 5,541 of these forms were signed.

With the AAP results and projects set to be part of today’s board meeting, Rice says they will present their findings and responses to the board at the meeting.

“The Comox Valley Regional District Board still has the ability to either forgo this process altogether or to carry forward the process,” said Rice.

They hope by bringing their findings, the board can understand the public’s point of view, adding it is up to them to decide how they want to move forward.

The meeting starts at 4:00 p.m. today.
