Comox’s Tower 35 fire truck features new Indigenous artwork.
Comox Fire Rescue revealed the artwork on Tuesday, which shows a family of four orcas, meant to symbolize unity and strength within the fire department.
The art was made by local artist and K’omoks First Nation member Pamela Mitchell, with her work being chosen out of several different submissions from other artists.
She says the whale not only represents unity, but also bravery and family.
“The whale encompasses what the fire department is all about,” said Mitchell.
“Not only do you have to have great strength and bravery to run into the building on fire, but the family and unity that is created within the department is strength within itself.”
Mayor Nicole Minions says they are proud to showcase the artwork on the truck, one that comes from a member of the first nation.
