An upcoming raffle aims to make the dreams of two Comox Valley boys come true.
Help Fill a Dream Foundation, an organization that supports families with kids struggling with a health challenge, has announced a 50/30/20 raffle with Georgia Strait Collision and Saratoga Speedway.
The raffle aims to raise $50,000, with half the money to help support Ronin and Gavin, two boys from the Valley.
Executive Director of the foundation Craig Smith says this is the first time they’re attempting a fundraiser at this scale.
“Most people are familiar with a 50/50 raffle, where the winner gets half the funds raised, while the other half goes to the not-for-profit, and in this case, we wanted to spread the love a little further,” said Smith.
“It’s 50 percent of the funds raised going to the not-for-profit, but there will be two winners. The first winner gets 30 percent of the funds raised, and the second winner gets 20 percent. It’s unique in the sense that there are two people with a chance of winning this time.”
Smith says in the Foundation’s Dreams program, Ronin and Gavin each submitted a dream for consideration, with both dreams approved.
For eleven-year-old Ronin, he wants to travel to Disney World with his family in December this year.
“He wants to do what so many kids want to do, he wants to go to the happiest place on earth, and what he expressed to us when he submitted the application that he’s never traveled, and never been on a plane,” said Smith.
“With most families we work with, they spend so much of their time focused on the child’s illness and dealing with medical concerns. Travel is usually related to hospitals or doctors’ appointments so when they can take a trip, it’s life-changing for the whole family.”
For fifteen-year-old Gavin, his dream is to attend the Bovington Tank Fest in Dorset England in June this year as he’s described as a military history buff and is fascinated with tanks.
With the dreams costing a total of $24,000, Smith says the fundraiser needs to be sold out to reach their goal.
The draw takes place at Saratoga Speedway on May 18, starting at 3:00 p.m.
