Local governments in the Comox Valley approve of the K’ómoks treaty ahead of this weekend’s ratification vote.
In a joint statement released by the CVRD, the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, and Village of Cumberland all approve of the treaty, citing the hard work and contributions needed to recognize this point.
CVRD Chair Will-Cole Hamilton and Mayors Bob Wells, Nicole Minions, and Vickey Brown said the entire process has been a testament to the self-determination of K’ómoks First Nation.
“We stand ready to engage collaboratively with K’ómoks, respecting the varied perspectives of its members, and we commit to being a supportive partner, no matter the path chosen.”
The treaty will help advance reconciliation between the governments and the Nation, along with empowering them to become a self-governing First Nation.
The motion of support comes after hereditary chiefs representing the Wei Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, and Kwiakah Nations condemned the treaty for involving land near Sayward.
The ratification vote takes place Saturday, March 8, from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the K’ómoks Administration Building.
