Island MP says Carney’s win makes no difference for Vancouver Island

An Island MP says Mark Carney’s election win doesn’t make a difference for Vancouver Island.

On Sunday, former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney was chosen by the Liberal Party of Canada as their new leader and Prime Minister, winning with nearly 86 percent of the vote.

Courtenay-Alberni NDP MP Gord Johns says while he congratulates Carney on his victory, his election doesn’t make a difference in this riding.

“This is going to be a two-way fight between Conservatives and New Democrats for this riding, like it has been for the past 50 years, even with Justin Trudeau’s wave back in 2015,” said Johns.

He says with the ongoing trade war with the United States, he hopes Carney will work across political lines and ensure all leaders, political parties and elected officials stand together in response to tariff threats.

With a snap federal election expected to be called by Carney, Johns says it would be one of the most critical elections of our lifetime, adding he hopes people do get out there and vote.
