A local farmer’s market is happy with the recognition of their work through recent awards.
Earlier this month, the BC Farmer’s Market Awards took place, recognizing farmers markets for their impact on communities throughout BC, including Vancouver Island.
Comox Valley Farmers Market had 10 nominations, and walked away with five awards, winning Most Outstanding Community Impact for Non-farmer Vendor, Most Outstanding Community Impact for Farm vendor, Best Live Entertainment at a Farmer’s Market, Most Outstanding Community Impact for small markets, and the Best Contribution to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the Farmers’ Market.
General manager of the market Twila Skinner says it’s a great feeling winning these awards.
“Our vendors, staff and board work hard year-round to bring loads of local product to the community, so it feels good to be recognized for that hard work,” said Skinner.
She says while they would like to win every award they’re nominated for, they recognize they’re up against great competition, adding they’re happy to see the outcome.
The wins are the most the Market has won in a single awards show, according to Skinner.
Following this success, Skinner says they want to continue doing as much as possible with local.
“Getting the word out about our Farmer’s Market, farmers, producers and what they do, and what it means to be local is something we’ll continue to work on,” said Skinner.
“One of our prime focuses this year is making sure people understand what it means to support local and how they can do that.”
The market is grateful for the support of the community.
