New Arts & Culture plan adopted by Courtenay council

A new plan to support arts and culture in Courtenay has been adopted by City council.

Called Culture Connects Us, it aims to advance truth and reconciliation through arts and culture, build community resilience, develop accessible and affordable cultural spaces, bolster community arts, and to bring development to the cultural sector for the next decade.

The plan comes after two years of engagement with residents, arts and cultural partners, and equity priority groups, with City council officially adopting it on their March 12 meeting.

Mayor Bob Wells says the plan reflects the passion and commitment in the community.

“We heard loud and clear throughout the development of this plan how much our residents value arts and culture and the role it plays in connecting us to one another,” said Wells.

“It will support long-term stability in our cultural landscape through many specific and practical actions that will support investment in culture as a benefit to our economy, tourism and social well-being.”

The City says staff are putting together an implementation strategy for the plan, with plans to use a phased approach, prioritizing investments, and hiring a culture and events coordinator.
