Comox’s Liam Mackenzie makes Vancouver Whitecaps first team debut

A Comox Valley native made his MLS debut for their hometown club over the weekend.

18-year-old Liam Mackenzie debuted for the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS league play Saturday, earning a start against Chicago Fire FC in a 3-1 loss.

After the match Mackenzie said to reporters it would have been nice to have gotten the win, but it was nice to be able to friends and family who made the trip over to watch him play.

“It was a lot of nerves at first for sure, but it was a great moment and a great feeling stepping onto the field and getting my first start.”

Mackenzie became the fourth youngest player in club history to start an MLS match.

The midfielder recorded a secondary assist over 65 minutes of action before being subbed off, becoming the youngest Whitecap ever to record an assist in their first match.

It was the Whitecaps first loss of the MLS regular season, bringing their record to 4-1-0 through five games.
