Courtenay native selected to receive 2025 Vimy Pilgrimage Award

A student from Courtenay has been selected to visit Europe to learn more about the impact of the First World War.

Nico Jerome has been selected for a 2025 Vimy Pilgrimage Award, which brings Canadians to France to pay respects at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.

Jerome said he’s hoping to think on a deeper level to help remember those who fought and died for their country.

“Empathy can help guide us by giving us some emotions that often will make you think more.”

The program provides youth aged 15 to 17 to travel across France and Belgium to visit key First World War sites, museums, cemeteries and battlefields, including Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, and the In Flanders Fields Museum.

The trip helps the students understand the historical impact the sites have to help equip them with knowledge and perspectives to help them in their future endeavors.

Jerome and other selected participants will take part in the program from April 3 to 10.
