No injuries were reported following an early morning fire on Huband Road on Sunday.
At 4:30 a.m. that day, Courtenay Fire Rescue received a report of a structure fire at 2000-block of Huband Road, with callers saying everybody was out of the structure when the fire took place.
Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Welsh says when they arrived on scene, there were heavy flames and smoke from the centre of the structure, with the fire already burning through the roof.
“There was heavy damage in the main area, and at least half of the structure was heavily involved when we arrived,” said Welsh.
“We had 22 to 23 firefighters on scene, and we were able to knock down the fire and lots of valuables were able to be maintained for the owners.”
He says because of the fires, there was a partial collapse of the roof, making it hard to do a search of the home. Within 30 minutes, the flames were under control and with help from BC Hydro, the firefighters were able to perform the search and mop up hot spots.
While one of the owners had smoke inhalation, both the owners and firefighters suffered no injuries from the flames.
For what caused the fire, Welsh adds they found nothing suspicious and will reveal the cause once an investigation and a report are finished.
