Violent & property crimes have gone down in Courtenay; says police report

In the first three months of this year, Courtenay has seen a decrease in violent and property crimes.

Comox Valley RCMP put together a Quarterly Report for the fourth quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which covers January 1 to March 31 this year.

The report says 187 violent crimes were reported in this quarter, a 17 percent decrease compared to the number from the fourth quarter last fiscal year,

While assault, harassment, uttering threats, and sex offences were the most common crimes reported, assault and uttering threats went down by 28 and 21 percents respectively. Sex offence reports stayed at 17 percent from last year, while harassment went up by 8 percent.

When it comes to property crimes, 479 were reported, 22 percent less than the number last year, with Mischief to Property, Shoplifting, Fraud, Theft from a vehicle, residential break and enters, auto thefts, break and enters on buses, bike theft, arson, and utility thefts all seeing decreases.

Those numbers range from 1 to 65 percent decreases, according to the report.

For drug possession, those calls have gone up by 89 percent, with traffic offences seeing an increase of 50 percent.
