To respond to financial challenges, North Island College has adopted a budget for 2025-2026.
At a meeting in Port Alberni on Thursday, the NIC Board of Governors passed the $67.1 million budget, which will focus on fiscal sustainability for the institution.
The college says they worked on making the budget balanced despite challenges they have faced from the federal government’s cap on international student study permits.
With that cap leading to enrolment going down, Vice president of Finance and College Services Colin Fowler says getting it balanced required making difficult choices.
“As a small college that serves a geographically large region, fiscal sustainability will always be an important pillar to the success of North Island College,” said Fowler.
The budget includes $3 million in reduced costs, resulting in some less programming and staffing levels.
They hope with these changes, the college can better respond to current fiscal realities.
