Comox Strathcona Waste Management is hoping to start construction of the new landfill site in the Comox Valley later this year.
The current site is nearing capacity and is in the process of being closed down.
Senior Manager of Solid Waste Services, James Mathers, says the goal is to have the new site up and running before the current site hits capacity.
Mathers says work is ongoing to shut down the current site, including installing gas collection systems to meet provincial standards.
