In Africa, Aids has taken a terrible toll in wiping out a generation of mothers, leaving grandmothers to care for orphaned children. A group of Vancouver Island grandmothers are set to cycle from Campbell River to Victoria for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, helping their African counterparts care for the little ones.
Local event spokesperson Marianne Muir says riders are from Campbell River and the Comox Valley.
That group of dedicated grannies cycle into Victoria early on Sunday afternoon. In the seven previous annual rides the cyclists have raised a total of $372,000, last year the tally hit $85,000.
