Spill from mine under investigation in Strathcona Park

The environment ministry and mine operators at the Myra Falls operation in Strathcona Park are investigating a spill.

On Friday several thousand litres of an acidic substance spilled into nearby Myra Creek.

A team from the environment ministry have been on site and in a statement say preliminary results from water checks show pH values meet water quality guidelines for aquatic health.

The ministry also says there is no drinking water concern…. and the Medical Health Officer has said the risk to human health is minimal.

The company that owns the mine says the emergency response systems at Myra Falls detected the problem early and began remedial measures immediately.
